Back in the 1960s, one game turned living rooms into chaotic playgrounds of limbs and laughter. That game? Twister.
When it first launched in 1966, Twister caused a scandal—literally. At the time, it was dubbed “sex in a box” by critics because it required players to touch each other in close proximity, something no board game had dared to do before. But that all changed overnight…
On May 3, 1966, Twister was catapulted to fame when Johnny Carson invited actress Eva Gabor to play it on The Tonight Show. The sight of the glamorous Gabor and Carson tangled in colourful contortions left the audience howling with laughter—and left retailers scrambling to restock the game. Sales skyrocketed. Twister became a cultural phenomenon.
Decades later, it’s still a party classic, bridging generations with nothing but a plastic mat, a spinner, and a lot of laughter.
🌀 How to Play Twister
What You Need:
- A Twister mat (with coloured circles)
- The spinner (included in the game)
Players: 2 or more (best with 3+ for mayhem)
Set Up:
- Lay the mat flat on the floor.
- One person acts as the referee/spinner (or take turns).
- Everyone else removes shoes and gets ready to twist!
Gameplay:
- The referee spins and calls out a body part and a colour. For example:
“Right hand, red!” - Each player must place that body part on a circle of the corresponding colour.
- As more spins are called, players contort to stay balanced and not fall.
- If a player touches the mat with anything other than hands or feet, or falls—they’re out.
- Last person standing wins!
